Gearing up for your Fishing Trip

Each individual should bring the following gear with them:

  1. A complete set of good quality water-proof rain gear, preferably a three-quarter length jacket with a hood.  Rain pants or bib overalls are optional - we will provide these if conditions require.
  2. One pair of good quality hip boots that fit firmly with two pairs of socks.
  3. One wool sweater (heavy) or polyester pile jacket such as Patagonia or borg pile
  4. One warm jacket - down or hollo fill.  You should expect temperatures from 46 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  Most fishing is done from open 18 foot skiffs which travel up to 20 miles a day on the river and lake.  Early morning fishing will be cool with frequent fog or mist.  Be prepared to dress in multiple layers, which will give adequate warmth.  Long underwear is helpful when fishing on rainy, cool days.
  5. One pair cotton or light wool gloves are advised for those who have sensitive hands
  6. Several pair of outdoor pants - light filson wool or Levis are suitable for summer temperature ranges.
  7. One bill hat and a stocking hat - or bill hat with ear flaps
  8. One pair of sun glasses
  9. Several wool or flannel shirts
  10. Camera gear (large memory card or lots of film!) with water-proof carrying case.  Telephoto lenses are very helpful for wildlife shots.
  11. One pair of deck shoes or rubber bottom camp shoes (LL Bean and Cabelas) are very good for Alaska.
  12. 20 pound test line and medium weight spinning, casting and fly gear are suitable for Salmon and Trout.

Fishing lures used include one-half to one ounce Daredevils and Pixies, Rapalas and small Mepps spinners.  These may be converted to single hooks.  Dry Fly patterns include the Adams, Wolf Black Gnatt, Wooly Worm variations, Mudler Minnows and dark quarter ounce jigs.  Size 7 to 9 Fly Rods with both heavy sinking tip and floating lines are advisable depending on the species fished for.  Have at least 100 feet of 25 pound test backing on your reels.  Casting reels with 17 to 25 pound high quality line set on six and one-half to eight and one-half Salmon Rods are ideal trolling and casting for Salmon.  Medium to Ultra Light spinning tackle works well for other species.
